How to support conscious fashion in time of Covid-19

Show solidarity
Ultimately, we are all connected through what we’re wearing. The Fair Wear Foundation reports that especially now in these hard times it is crucial that consumers support the brands that take care of their employees.
European governments are making encouraging promises of support to the businesses and their employees in their countries, promising not to let them down in these difficult times. Especially now, It’s important that we show solidarity with one another through the clothes we wear. Especially now it is important that we support each other and start giving more. Thinking more about others than ourselves. That is why we think that the launch of the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard was the best move fashion platform Our World could possibly make. During an Instagram live session, we spoke with Nanette Hogervorst founder of the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard and with five of their connected partners about this initiative and why it is important.

The Sustainable Fashion Giftcard is really showing the fun and power of sustainable fashion, the fact that sustainable fashion comes in so many different forms.

Chanel Trapman - MUMSTER

Sustainable Fashion Giftcard
Nanette Hogervorst has been working in the sustainable fashion industry for a couple of years now. The paths of MUMSTER and Our World crossed in a very early stage and therefore we had the opportunity to grow together in a very new and uncultivated play field. The play field of the sustainable fashion industry.

With her fashion platform Our World, it is her mission to raise more awareness about the sustainable alternatives in the fashion industry. Nanette and her team put their passion into the publishing of very inspiring articles and the organization of multiple events about innovation and entrepreneurship in the fashion industry, in collaboration with many different initiatives. Now, Nanette wants to do more and wants to make sustainable fashion more accessible and fun for everyone, launching the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard.

Nanette: ‘With the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard you can easily introduce everyone to the world of slow fashion. When you give someone a Sustainable Fashion Giftcard, you give them the opportunity to decide for themselves how they want to connect with the sustainable fashion world. Connecting in a way that suits perfectly to their own interests and needs.” We are happy that The Sustainable Fashion Giftcard is really showing the fun and power of sustainable fashion, the fact that sustainable fashion comes in so many different forms. On April 20, Nanette will officially launch the card during a digital event.

'I was inspired by the film 'Earthlings', it really drove me to make a difference. I wanted to design a sustainable, ethical and high quality product, without harming animals, people or the planet for an affordable price. A concept which was definitely missing in the luxury bags and accessories market.'

Theresa Jentzsch - Osier

Instagram live-session
During our Instagram live session I spoke with Nanette, followed by five partners who are connected to the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard. We were honored that everyone welcomed us in their cozy homes for this session and made time for this spontaneous conversation. It was the very first Instagram live session for everyone, so fun guaranteed! Of course I asked them what they think of the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard, why it is important and to who they would give the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard to.

The Collection One
Lisa Schotman the founder of The Collection One explained us how challenging it was for her to deal with the new Covid-19 situation. About a year ago Lisa decided to quit her full-time job and follow her dream to open her own physical slow fashion store. Lisa was slowly building a business for several years with her slow fashion webshop The Collection one, but opening a physical store was her ultimate goal. For over a year she worked towards the grand opening of her own physical slow store, until the universe planned otherwise and served the Corona pandemic. Lisa had to cancel her grand opening and was expected to improvise. Finding ways to keep that positive energy and belief in making her dream come true. Lisa is very happy to be connected to the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard, an opportunity to introduce more people to slow fashion, especially to people who have absolutely no clue about what slow fashion is.

Lisa had to cancel her grand opening and was expected to improvise. Finding ways to keep that positive energy and belief in making her dream come true.

Osier
After seeing the documentary ‘Earthlings’ she was determined to make a change in the world. She turned her frustration into creativity and started her company Osier.
A creative, independent brand living for sustainable, timeless and ethical design. For Theresa it is important that everyone realizes that we put quality above quantity. She would give the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard to everyone in her team, because they worked their buts off!

Dom
Zhueng co-founder of DOM really loves fashion. He believes we need to re-think the way we look at fashion. That is why he and his business partner Diede came up with a very unique concept. Their festival bags are made from used fabrics they collect in collaboration with the textiles collecting foundation Sympany. The bags are being made by refugees in collaboration with atelier ‘Atelier Opnieuw’ founded by Abdul & Mohamad from Syria. He  really believes the Sustainable Fashion Giftcard can contribute to a positive change in the fashion industry. He would give the card to his mother, because he is so thankful for everything she gave to him.

Ratna and Pascal felt the urge to really do something and use their skills and knowledge to give something back to society in these hard times.

Lena Fashion Library
Suzanne Smulders founder of Lena The Fashion Library in Amsterdam, believes that we can use the Covid-19 situation as an opportunity to experience how it really feels to buy less and how that benefits us in different ways. It was the reason why she started the fashion library, giving people the opportunity to enjoy fashion to the fullest, without buying anything. Due to the current situation she is scheduling appointments with clients, so they can still visit the library. A very good idea which gives everyone the opportunity to still enjoy fashion under any circumstances without harming people or planet.

Fraenck
During our Instagram live-session, the founders of the label Fraenck, Ratna and Pascal sat together on their couch with their cat and a big smile on their faces. They find it really challenging to deal with this whole new situation. Ratna and Pascal saw the sales in their store and webshop drop immediately. The situation gave them no other choice than send their team home, a really sad feeling. Ratna and Pascal felt the urge to really do something to help society in these difficult times and use their skills and knowledge to give something back to society. So they came up with the idea to produce mouth masks for a very low price. A perfect way to keep running their business suiting to what society really needs right now.
